Erin Cartee loves of all things artistic and has an extreme curiosity for the world’s strangest medium, glass… These are the driving forces behind her past, present and future work.
Erin began her glass journey in 1999 with the purchase of a few simple tools and a small torch, hoping she had found a new hobby. Little did she know she'd soon be bitten by the “glass bug” and this hobby would soon turn into a passion and full-time work.
Self-taught for the first 3 years, studying under renowned glass artists Mike Plane and Eric Goldschmidt in their 4th and 5th years, helped to further Erin's technical ability .
“ My main focus, so far, in the world of hot glass has been flamework. I melt and manipulate glass in the torch flame, rather than in a glory hole and furnace, which is what most people are familiar with. There are pros and cons to each type of glasswork. What I especially enjoy about flamework is that it allows me to put a lot of detail in a relatively small space.”
This unique form of glass blowing has achieved much recognition as a fresh and new approach to art glass with a contemporary feel that is almost entirely an American form of glasswork.
Shannon Norris, Erin's Husband is gaining national recognition for his artistic marbles, which have become quite popular among collectors and gallery owners. Erin can barely keep up with the demand for her interesting jewelry designs and ever so popular paperweights.
The two have won numerous awards at juried, fine art and craft shows all over the eastern U.S. and recently had their work on display at The Kobe Lampwork Museum in Kobe, Japan. Shannon and Erin currently live with their son, Isaac, in Candler, N.C. , just 15 min. from downtown Asheville.
