Nan's creates functional art designed and made to be used for the home. Her work includes but is not limited to pottery made plates, bowls, cups, vases and more.

"Making functional work connects me to the age-old tradition of artist craftsmen who make beautiful objects for daily use"

Nan Rothwell has been potting since 1969 and to this day she still enjoys every aspect of making pottery, especially throwing and firing.

The alchemy of transforming soft clay into finished pots continues to excite and inspire Nan. Nan also teaches classes at her workshop. She is also teaches and speaks at conferences and craft schools.

Nan Rothwell Pottery"I had some wonderful teachers when I was first learning to pot, and teaching allows me to pass the favor on.  Drop me a line if you want to know my current teaching schedule".

artist statement
Except for one break from potting while my kids were young, I have made functional pottery all my adult life. For many years, all my pots were salt glazed.

When I set up to teach classes, I added a stoneware reduction kiln. A salt kiln does much of the decorative work for the potter – change and variety depend on where and how the salt fumes hit the work.

Nan Rothwell PotteryIt’s been fun learning to create that kind of variety using regular glazes. Now I have the best of all pottery worlds, with both a reduction and a salt kiln on site, plus access to firing with wood. I’ve come to appreciate the way wood extends the variety and serendipity of kiln effects as ash and extreme heat transform the edges and corners of forms in subtle ways.
