Roosevelt was born and raised by a single mother of six, in the flatlands of east Oakland, California. When growing up, he remembered taking several trips to the welfare office with his family.
While his mother battled with alcoholism, Roosevelt at age 12, began drawing to escape the daily difficulties of home life.
During high school he was introduced to a fellow classmate who was an excellent artist. Their Artistic relationship grew and challenged Roosevelt, leading to a refined sense of vision, clarity and improved technique. His unique style has been directly influenced by his artistic nature.
Art provided a sanctuary for Roosevelt growing up by distancing him from the local drugs, gangs and violence that surrounded his daily life. After an early marriage failed, he was left homeless for four years.
Through these life changing experiences, Art is what kept him going, and through his Art, he sees a reflection of his true self, the challenges he has faced, and the challenges he has overcome. Roosevelt Washington captures human emotions, fantasies and experiences through unique artistic expression.
